Horse Riding Clothing For Kids – Costly Mistakes Beginners Make

Whether you’re a new rider or the parent of a new rider, you’ve no doubt already discovered one of the most enduring truths about riding horses: horse riding clothing is expensive. And confusing. There’s so much of it, in so many different styles, for so many different types of riding, it’s hard to know what to buy. And once you finally do pick out a few items, the prices are so shockingly huge you begin to think it might be better to forget about the ponies altogether and get into scrapbooking instead.

But don’t give up yet! By avoiding the most common mistakes that beginners make, you can save yourself lots of time, money, and frustration.

Horse Riding Clothing Mistake #1: Buying Everything

When first starting out, many new riders think they need to own every piece of horse riding gear under the sun. They load down their shopping carts and wipe out their budgets only to eventually discover they didn’t need half of it, or they bought the wrong kind. Or, worse yet, their interest in riding was only a phase and all that expensive equipment is now sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

To make sure you avoid this mistake, just keep in mind one simple phrase: You don’t need all that stuff. All you really need when starting out are three simple things:

a horse riding helmet a comfortable pair of pants some horse riding boots.

And that’s it. With just those three items, you can take your first riding lessons, learn the basics, and figure out whether or not riding horses is something you really want to do before you throw piles of money at it. This, of course, brings us to…

Horse Riding Clothing Mistake #2: Buying the Wrong Helmet

There are many different kinds of horse riding helmets, all designed for very specific disciplines or skill levels. Unfortunately, many of them look the same and it would be very easy for a beginner to spend way too much money on the wrong one. To avoid this common mistake, all you really need to know about are two different types: show helmets and schooling helmets.

Show helmets are exactly what they sound like: helmets you wear to a show. They’re very formal and very expensive, often reaching several hundred dollars apiece.  Now here’s the good news: Until you reach a level where you’re ready to compete in front of judges, you don’t need a show helmet.

Schooling helmets are also exactly what they sound like: helmets you wear while schooling, or lesson riding. Schooling helmets are way less formal and way less expensive; a decent one can be gotten for around $30-$40. They’re also much more durable and easier to clean, meaning the wear-and-tear of weekly lessons won’t be such a strain on your time or pocketbook.

Horse Riding Clothing Mistake #3: Buying the Wrong Breeches

Breeches are those stretchy pants you see professional equestrians wear. They’re made of a special material that allows for freedom of movement and wicks moisture (aka sweat) away from the skin. They also have very soft seams specially stitched to keep from chafing the rider’s legs at the points where they make contact with the sides of the horse’s body. These are all good things.

When you shop for breeches, you’ll find many different kinds with many different names: knee patch breeches, full-seat breeches, low-rise breeches, etc. The kind you ultimately need will depend on which style of riding you get into, but, in the beginning, you can easily get away with a nice, cheap pair of schooling tights.

Note: Some people will tell you that you can just wear a tight pair of jeans, but that really isn’t a very good idea. First of all, most trainers will only let you get away with that for a couple of lessons (until you decide if you want to keep riding or not), and, secondly, the seams on a pair of jeans will quickly begin to chafe — and eventually scar — your legs. Do yourself a favor, and find a nice pair of riding tights.

Horse Riding Clothing Mistake #4: Buying the Wrong Boots

As with all the other pieces of horse riding clothing, there are many different kinds of boots, all made for specific types of riding. Many beginners immediately go for the tall, glossy boots that they see so many other riders wearing, but this is a huge mistake. Not only are those tall boots extremely expensive, they’re also very tough to break in. If your new rider is still growing, by the time the boots are fully broken in, they will likely have outgrown them; meaning all that money you just spent has gone straight down the drain. And finally, as with show helmets, the wear-and-tear of lesson riding will quickly cause the value of your investment to dwindle.

When starting out, the only horse riding boots a beginner needs are paddock boots. Paddock boots are short, ankle-length boots that look a bit like “granny boots.”  They have the same safety features as tall boots, but are far less expensive, far less difficult and time-consuming to break in, and not so heartbreaking to get dirty. Also, for kids under 12, paddock boots are perfectly fine to wear for shows, meaning you can definitely get your money’s worth from them for quite some time.

And That’s It!

Sure, it’s easy to spend a lot of money on horse riding clothing. And it’s really easy to buy the wrong kind. But by avoiding these common mistakes that beginning riders make, you can minimize your cost and maximize your time enjoying the reason you got into riding in the first place: spending time with the horse!

Cheerleading Clothes – Their Style And Durability

When you were in school you likely noticed that there were a number of your female classmates who wore cheerleading clothes most of the school year. Of course, probably not for fun, but because there was always a sport in need of cheerleaders. The colors on these clothes were always brilliant and cheerful looking. You could also see the most important item on their cheerleading clothes. This was the school’s team emblem.

Although there are many sports that require cheerleaders, it is almost always true that the most significant event in schools is that of football. So many of the cheerleading teams are formed to promote these young men into giving their very best at football games – both at the school field and when they travel to other schools. So to stand out from the assorted people on the field, cheerleaders can be seen wearing cheerleading uniforms.

Also, it never seized to amaze me about football cheerleaders. It often times didn’t matter if it was pouring down rain or small wind storm these girls and their uniforms stood up to the test. This leads me to my next notion, that is cheerleading clothes must be rough and rugged.

These cheerleading clothes are designed to withstand lots of wear and tear. For instance the young women would be doing cheer movements like a pyramid structure. At other times they will do handstands and cartwheels. As you see these are movements that involve using the whole body. Therefore their cheerleading clothes need to be supple and lightweight. They need to also be able to withstand rain and wind.

There are many different types of cheerleading clothes that are worn by cheerleaders. These outfits can be a short pleated skirt, briefs and close fitting top, a body hugging short sleeveless dress, bright colored top and shorts. The main characteristic of these cheerleading clothes is that they are short so that the legs have copious room to perform all of the cheer movements without being restricted. Also, that the tops are form fitting. This is to elevate them getting in the way of the movements of their cheers.

The other fact that is evident in these cheerleading clothes is that the school’s squad and emblem are brilliantly emblazoned on the front of the clothes. Again, this is the to support the comradery. Some of the other pieces that generally go with the outfit are the other accessories such as pom poms, hair accessories and of course, sneakers that won’t clash with their schools colors. As you can see part of the attraction that cheerleading holds for young women is these clothes.

There are many places where you can get cheerleading clothes, but you must check with your schools cheer instructor if the cheer uniform will be purchased by the school or if you should go about purchasing the outfit yourself. More often then not, the school does the purchasing of the uniforms. One of the major reasons for this is to have uniformity. One of the main concerns in cheerleading clothes is that the uniforms should not only fit comfortably but they must not look like another team or school’s cheer costume. The schools cheer instructor usually has a pretty good hand on all this, that is why they have here in that role.

So, a few tips to remember are; form fitting tops, short skirts and briefs. This is for the freedom to be able to perform all their cheers. Also, mothers, remember part of the appeal of cheerleading clothes is that they let your daughter express her inner feelings in a safe, positive and comfortable environment.

Billiard Clothing – Pool Players Seem To Like Clothing With Billiards Pictures And Phrases

Posted by on November 15, 2009 at 4:26 pm in Recreation And Sports

Billiard clothing is sure to be found at any major pool tournament or billiards trade show. You will find many shirts with pool and billiards pictures and sayings. Hats and visors are also a pretty popular items. Coats and jackets with some pretty cool pics and phrases will be found at these events as well.

I picked up some of my first billiard clothing in Las Vegas (BCA Tournament) back in the early 90’s. I purchased one five dollar raffle ticket and won a $300 shopping spree for billiards clothing. This was pretty cool because one of my friends had just purchased 4 five dollar tickets and I said it only takes one and sure enough I won the raffle.

The following year my girl friend at the time, purchased one ticket from the same vendors while I was shooting pool in a singles match. Sure enough we won again. (What are the odds of that? lol) We picked out some cool jackets on this one and put them on so we didn’t have to carry them around.

We went to the table where my friend was playing a match and he looked up and asked, What’s up with the jackets? He then said, you didn’t win that thing again Jack? I just smiled and said yes we did. He then proceeded to pull about 10 tickets out of his pocket, throw them on the floor and stomp on them.

Winning these two raffles back to back was cool. It set me up with $600 in billiard clothing for $10. I had shirts, jackets, hats and a few misc. billiards accessories.

I purchase a couple of shirts in Vegas every year. They have the year of tournament, they state that the tournament was at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and they say North American 8 Ball championship. I am wearing one right now as I type this article.

The other common places to find billiard clothing is in Billiards magazines such as Inside Pool or Billiards Digest. You will also find quite a selection on eBay if you search billiards. Type billiards clothing into Google and you will find many items as well.

If you play billiards in your local leagues, you may want to ask the tavern owner who sponsors your team about getting jackets or shirts or both. I have 4 jackets which I won from the APA tournaments in our area and one jacket which was given to me by the owner of the pool room where we play league. (Diamond Jim’s)

I have more shirts from the various leagues which I have played in than I can count. If you are way into the game as I am, it can be cool to wear clothing that Say’s so. A word of warning however. If you are looking to play for some money, having a shirt on that talks about an 8 ball championship can kill your action.

Post your questions, comments and stories below about you and your billiard clothing.

To your run out success.

Cycling Clothes and Cold Weather

Do you ride during the colder months? Do you have the necessary clothing for it? This could mean anything from warmer socks to a long sleeve jersey. It is not fun to ride with out the proper clothing and being cold. There are a few possibilities of how you can have warmer clothing while using what you probably already have. You can stay warm while riding by putting on a pair of sweat pants over your cycling shorts.

Make sure the sweats are not baggy. This can cause your pants to get caught in the chain and gears, if the sweats are baggy. You can also do the same for the top part of your body. To help keep your feet warm, you can get cycling shoe covers. Or you can get warmer socks. Either method you chose should keep your feet warmer.

If you do not want to wear sweats over the top of your existing cycling clothing. You can always get tights or warmers for your legs. You can also get base layers for the top or a long sleeve jersey. A little bit cheaper method is to get warmers for your arms. Wearing a long sleeve shirt under your jersey can give the same desired result. Base layers work wonders on keeping you warm while you ride.

There are also cycling jackets you can wear. Jackets sometimes do more than just block some wind. Some will actually protect you from the rain or snow too. If you do not have some of the items mentioned you can always improvise with what you already possess. There is always a way if you are willing to do it. It is better to have on too many layers than not enough.

I have had the problem of not enough layers. The ride was not very pleasant and it do not end soon enough either. Do not be caught on a ride unprepared, as I have been. When you go out on the cold rides you will be glad you have on some warm clothing.

Figure Skating Clothing

Posted by on September 23, 2009 at 6:59 am in Recreation And Sports

What you wear on ice depends on your purpose for getting on ice. Will you be joining a competition or taking a figure skating test? Are you there just for recreational figure skating? How many hours do you expect to spend on practice?

When you are on practice, your comfort and safety top the list of priorities in selecting clothing. Your garments should neither be too loose nor too tight, but just right to give you the freedom to move. Too loose is dangerous, because it forms loops that can get dragged on ice or by others, leading to possible harm. When it is too tight, on the other hand, there is no room for your movements, so you effectively limit your motion.

During practice, you should also make sure that your clothing is able to keep you warm. You might want to try a layered approach, meaning, prefer many thin ones rather than one piece of thick clothing, because the former permits adjustment to the cold. Rather than the sparkly tights used in competitions, try on jogging pants or sweat suits for practice, because these are way more comfortable. If available, nylon windsuits are also nice choices, because they are lightweight, they can keep you warm, are loose enough to allow movement, and they tend to keep water away from your skin. To further keep you warm, always wear hand gloves and socks in practice. These are ideal for the cold, and gloves also assist you when you get up the ice in the event of a fall.

If, however, you are joining a competition, your clothing should be different. It needs to be a little bit more special, because it is one way by which you can capture the audiences and the judges attention. Your comfort gets ranked lower in your priorities. The U.S. Figure Skating Association has set standards for clothing during competitions, and these are the following: 1) modest, dignified clothing, which is appropriate for the competition, 2) full-length trousers for men, 3) clothing with a neckline and sleeves for men, 4) skirts or pants for women that cover the entire hips, 5) prohibition of wearing unitards and bare midriffs, 5) avoidance of excessive decoration like beads and sequins, and if they are used, care should be ensured such that they do not fall off. It does not really matter where you want your figure skating clothing made.

What is more important is that these standards are well understood and followed, to avoid disqualifications and any other untoward event. In selecting the fabric, you might want those which are stretchable, to allow you more room for movement, without tearing your clothing out. Finally, always remember that you are being judged by what you do on ice, rather than what you wear. Thus you can always keep it simple, neat, modest, tidy, and appropriate for your age and what you are going to do.

What you wear is dictated by what you do on the ice. First make certain that it is appropriate for the event, and then take into consideration your comfort while performing.

Bicycle Clothing – What Cycling Gear to Wear and When

Avid cyclists know there is a wide-range of cycling gear available to choose from. Determining what you will need means asking yourself some key questions.

- What gear is required by law?

- What gear will provide the most comfort for the bicycling I plan to do?

- What equipment is best for the summer/winter conditions?

Cycling store employees should be able to help you answer these questions as you look to purchase new or updated cycling clothing.

What gear is required by Law?

Nearly every government has a regulation or law requiring helmets for cyclist. Some states require them for all riders while others set an age requirement. A good, well-fit helmet could save your life. Whether mountain biking or street cycling, a helmet is a must have for anyone riding a bike.

Though not specifically required by law, many state cycling groups recommend wearing reflective clothing when biking as well. This is another safety benefit, ensuring you are able to be seen by cars and pedestrians.

What gear will provide the most comfort for the bicycling I plan to do?

Having a variety of clothing for cycling is recommended as what you need is based on how long your ride and wear. Cycling shorts are great for longer rides. They help to keep you cool while you are exerting yourself on the roadway. Quality cycling shorts are made of special material made specifically for comfort and moisture control. They usually have a padded seat for extra protection and comfort for extensive riding. Choosing a sleeveless cycling jersey to help keep you cool on long-rides is also recommended.

Mountain bikers who ride through brush and trees should look for a long-sleeve cycling jersey to protect their arms from abrasions. Cycling shirts or jerseys worth their salt will be made of synthetic fabric that is comfortable, lightweight and moisture resistant. This will ensure that, whether long or short-sleeved, the jersey will help a rider maintain a good temperature.

What equipment is best for the summer/winter conditions?

Avid bicyclers hit the road during all kinds of weather, especially if the bike is their primary form of transportation. For cold days, a cycling jacket or a wool cycling jersey will keep you warm against the cooler air while still keeping you dry by sweeping the sweat away from your skin. Windproof jackets are also available for wind and rain protection. Coupled with cycling pants or knee warmers, which keep your knees and legs warm and flexible, these items will help you have a pleasant ride, even when the weather is less than ideal.

As the weather warms, your cycling apparel should mirror what you would wear on long rides. Good cycling or bib shorts and a sleeveless jersey will keep you comfortable and cool. You may want to carry a lightweight, compact cycling jacket with you in case your ride goes later in the evening than you anticipated or you start out your ride early in the morning. There are a number of jackets available that can be easily stowed when the temperature rises. Cycling jacket made of breathable material that incorporates ventilation, like mesh vents, in the fabric are ideal.

There are many choices in bicycle clothing and not all of them are necessary. Depending on what kind of bicycler you are, you may find that less is more. But, if you are seriously into cycling, then choosing a variety of bicycle clothing is in your advantage – you will feel much more apt to get out there on your bike if you have all of the proper equipment, including comfortable clothing that helps to keep your body temperate and dry.

Winter Mountain Biking Clothes

Posted by on August 15, 2009 at 11:02 am in Recreation And Sports

There is no doubt that riding a bike of any kind in the chill of winter can be harsh and unforgiving, particularly if you live in a colder climate like some parts of North America or Europe where snow is common.

As with any sport, it is important to consider your clothing when riding in winter. When you sweat in cold weather, you expose your body to chills and windburn. This can lead to significant health issues, not the least being pneumonia.

Winter mountain bike clothing is specially designed to keep you warm whilst not inhibiting movement and flexibility. Let’s look at some of the basic clothes that will keep you warm this winter.

Winter Mountain Bike Shoes

Your feet will get cold very quickly, particular if they get wet from water splashing up off the ground as you ride. Toes are prone to frostbite in extreme conditions and due to pedaling pressure, circulation can be cut off. You should purchase specialist mountain bike shoes and booties. The booties zip up over the shoes and help to waterproof and warm your feet.

Socks

Mountain biking winter socks should be tall enough to be pulled half way up your calf. Good quality socks will wick moisture and provide a perfect fit without the feel of the seam which can be extremely uncomfortable when riding. The DeFeet Levi-T-Ator Bike Socks are one of the best choices for riding socks.

Gloves

Your hands will obviously feel the cold very quickly if exposed to the cold and wind. Some people are very prone to circulation problems in the fingers in cold weather and if this is you, you need to be even more stringent in your choice of gloves. Good quality gloves will have ample padding and heavy duty backs. The Novara Tenacity Mountain Bike Gloves are a good choice.

Cold Weather Clothing

Your clothing should consist of a long sleeve base layer with a good quality t-shirt on top. The under layer wicks moisture away from the skin and keeps you warm. It also helps to stop wind chill. A sports jacket on top on extra cold days is ideal.

By purchasing some good quality winter mountain bike clothing you will be able to enjoy riding your bike all year round without risking your health.
