Baby and Toddlers Clothes – The Evolution of Children’s Clothing

Posted by on August 31, 2009 at 11:53 am in Home And Family

Children’s clothing evolved as with all the things that are now present today.

From the beginning, children’s’ clothing used color to separate the genders. Especially in the olden days where little boys looked like little girls, the distinction can be made by the color of the clothes. Girls wore pink and little boys wore blue, this is as much true today as it is in the era of days gone by.

Because of historical accounts available like painting and photographs, it was not easily distinguished if a child was male or female. Thus, not only do the clothes determined the gender but the general appearance as well. This was manifested by the hair style that they were told to wear. It became a strong convention that little girls wear pretty dresses and their hair long while the little boys were told to wear the pants and sport short hair. However due to the evolution of time, little girls of today have adopted to wearing pants but the day hasn’t come yet where the boys adopted the dresses of girls!

In our modern world today, a general convention exists that girls are able to wear the clothes of boys but never the other way around. But that wasn’t the case in the 19th century where little girls and boys were dressed alike. Although during that time, girls were not allowed to dress in pants, otherwise, there was not much difference in the way they were dressed.

Up to the time of the second world war, clothes associated with girls were dresses, pantalets, smocks and pinafores.

Dresses

This was the basic clothing of girls up to the second world war since it was not everyday occurrence that girls wore pants or shorts before the war.

Bloomers

This was another staple in the little girls’ clothing where it served its purpose of
providing an alternative option to the restrictive and binding fashion sense during the 19th century. This can be attributed to Amelia Bloomer born 1818 – 1894 who was an American reformer espousing this cause. But the bloomer concept must be credited to Elizabeth Smith Miller as she was creator of the bloomers. Although this type of garment did not bloom at all.

Rompers

These were worn both by the girls and boys that were used primarily for play time. By the end of the second world war, rompers were basic staples for little girls wardrobe. They were usually used as costumes or uniforms for gym classes of girls.

Smocks

This is one generic children’s clothing of years gone by. As this was so common, different styles, accessories, adornments, and other details filled the repertoire of how a smock can look like. There were smocks of different colors, smocks with different buttoning styles – buttons located at the back, in the front, or on the side. There were also smocks with collars, with trims, with ties, with pockets, with belts, etc. It was usual in the 1950s that smocks of identical cut were bought by mothers for their children.

Pinafores

This was a very essential piece of garment for the girls’ wardrobe as they were usually worn by little girls of Europe and America.

Pantalets

These were worn both by boys and girls. Usually, boys wore plain pantalets while girls wore the fancier ones. But there were some boys who like to wear fancy Pantalets too.

Sailor suits

This was basically a boy’s garment but it became a unisex garment as girls started to wear sailor suits too.

Gothic Clothes Styles – From Romantic Goth to Cybergoth

Traditional period Goth garb usually consists of mostly black clothing along with some white and are often accessorized with silver or pewter. The stereotypical gothic outfit sometimes referred to as the romantic look may include elaborate gowns and corsets, veils, full skirts, neck corsets, fishnets, lace and velvets. Also popular are tight-fitting trousers, pointy boots, flouncy poet or pirate shirts and footwear with buckles. I find the simplicity of traditional Goth style lends itself to variation, and is can be combined with fetish elements to give it a dark and romantic edge.

Closely related to the Romantic (Victorian, Elizabethan, Renaissance) Goth style is the Gothic Lolita style that emerged from Japan, usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular with Gothic Lolitas and designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves and/or high-necked blouses. Some additions may include mini top hats, parasols, and lace headdresses.

Most recently, Goth fashion has been infiltrated by forward-thinking styles that are more futuristic, science fiction and youthful. UV-reactive colors and materials, progressive fashions, huge shoes and boots, wild hair extensions using artificial materials, often with an undercut shave, goggles, cybernetics, androgyny, the influence of cyberpunk or anime themes and body modification are some of the elements of Cybergoth. A full-spectrum of bright or neon colors are an exciting addition to black. For example, a popular combination is black with hot pink, a flattering color for most skin tones.

Of course, you can borrow elements of one or more gothic subcategory and sometimes this is dependant on the occasion. For gothic theme parties, you may combine elements of vintage, Victorian and fetish to create a costume that is intentionally spectacular and fantasy-oriented as an artistic display.

Tall, Plus Size Clothing – Finally Some Options

If you are plus size and also a tall woman, when it comes to clothes shopping, you probably feel like a minority. There are lots of clothing choices for plus size women and some specialty stores carry tall women’s clothing, but put the two combinations together and your choices are limited. Here are a couple of clothing stores options for the tall plus size woman:

1. Fashion Bug carries a few tall plus size pants in inseams up to 35 inches long. Fashion Bug has a special department for tall plus size clothing including jeans, career pants and tall leggings.

2. A great option for the tall plus size woman, is Custom Made Clothing. Land’s End is a great choice as you can get custom sized clothing in jeans, chinos and dress shirts. You specify the inseam length up to 40 inches long. You can also get your pants with or without a cuff. They also offer many style choices such as natural or relaxed fit, different waist style choices and flat front or pleated front. Their custom department makes it easy to get pants exactly the way you want them. I have used this option for both shirts and chinos and have been satisfied.

3. Avenue.com has some tall plus size clothing and they even offer designer jeans by “Seven Jeans” with inseam lengths to 33 inches. Avenue has other tall plus size pants with inseams to 34 inches.

If you are a tall plus size woman, you may have to search a little longer to find clothing that is long enough, but the good news is that there are more options available today than ever.

Rave Clothing – Fashionable and Comfy

Posted by on August 30, 2009 at 12:46 pm in Shopping And Product Reviews

The very word ‘clothing’ makes our mind take a deep plunge in the evergreen world of fashion. Very often we hear ‘rave clothing’. Now what actually we mean by rave clothing and what significance it has in the contemporary fashion is interesting to note. This style of clothing can be described as the particular outfits with which one can dance the night away. The rave fashion completely seems to vanish away from that of the earlier 90’s era and has given way to photon lights, fat hip-hop pants and glow sticks. In fact the origin of this style of clothing can be traced back to the 90s when the fashion of fat pants started booming all across. Soon after they went on to become an integral part of the rave culture. For this sect of people it is extremely important to wear on clothes which distinctly showcase their culture.

Rave clothing is all for the fashion conscious folks who loves to make a bold statement with their outfits. The birth of this clothing in turn lead to the development of two primary styles in the rave clothing collection which include bright and creative candy style as well as the sophisticated and elegant club style. The former clothing style is particularly adopted by the candy kids while the latter ones are opted for by that class of people who believe in the more sophisticated and elegant dressing pattern. In fact the major demand of the rave wear collection is its emphasis on being lightweight, comfortable and loose-fitting. When one intends to dress like a raver he/she should make it evident that the clothes are perfect enough to bring music and fashion together in perfect sync. Today they are also believed to be the most perfect and stylish clothes in the contemporary fashion market. The fashion of loose shirts and baggy pants are in fact the emblem of rave clothing. They define this clothing in a perfect manner.

The buyers of rave clothes often find it difficult to search for in the online sites. But then also if one searches for rave clothes in the inner corners of the online fashion stores they are sure to come upon some stuff which can be worn by them day in and day out. The price tags attached with each piece also helps you to make an effective decision. But it is always suggested that you should do a bit of research before opting for some great rave clothing which will inspire you more to add on to your collection. You may often find that some clothing stores offer rave clothes though they do not specialize in this collection. Since the dawn of this century the candy pattern rave clothing almost vanished and sophisticated pattern became a hot favorite of the ravers. This also reflected the fact that the ravers did not want themselves to be easily identified by their clothing. Whatever might be the case rave clothing is sure to be in fashion in the years to come.

Finding Authentic Belly Dancing Clothing

Everyone has seen the beautiful and exotic costumes that belly dancers wear. This is the image that Hollywood and other forms of entertainment have given us as authentic belly dancing costumes. But do the costumes we typically see vary from the traditional costume worn by belly dancers?

The costumes that we see today are not authentic versions of traditional belly dancing costumes. These costumes were copied by the Egyptian dancers based on what they saw in the Hollywood images of the 30’s and 40’s. These costumes have become so ingrained in society as authentic that we don’t really know what a traditional costume looks like anymore.

Egyptian Dance

The costumes that Egyptian dancers wear is usually a mermaid style skirt with a bra top. The skirt is typically full length. Beads or coins are usually added to the top for an added dramatic touch. This is the costume that is typically thought of when one thinks of belly dancers. Of course, it is a long way from the traditional costume.

The traditional costume was worn to cover the entire body. Showing flesh was not made popular until more recent times. A belt or scarf was used to accentuate the hips of the dancer. The talent required to perform the movements in a costume like this was great.

The dancer in a fully beaded dress performs dances called baladi. These are usually only found in folk dances and not the usual belly dance routines of today. You will find that western dancers will use these costumes for when they perform traditional folk dances but will also wear them for more current dances as well.

Turkish Dress

The belly dancing costumes worn in Turkey are considerably more revealing than those that are worn in Egypt. The skirts worn by Turkish women will usually have a very high slit that exposes the entire leg of the dancer. Belts are used to accentuate the body and movements of the dancer. This costume is very appealing to people watching the performance. Veils are not usually worn with these costumes. The use of a veil is a completely western addition.

Mix It Up

With all the many varieties of belly dancing costume you can sample from each of the different styles to find a look you like. It is a performance and the costume plays an integral role in that performance. Use what you think will give you the best effect in your dance.

Urban Clothing For Women

Of the many different styles of ladies’ clothes, urban clothing for women stands apart from the rest. Also known as hip-hop fashions, urban designs are generally casual and sexy. They accentuate the female form through the frequent use of tight-fitting bottoms and cropped tops often seen in hip hop music videos, but these themes are not the only components of urban clothes. Over sized sweatshirts with and without hoods are also popular. These add a comfortable element to urban clothing for women.

In addition to the comfortable look of too-large sweatshirts, urban clothing is often bought with a used or lived in look to it. Jeans have white patches on the front as though they have been worn for years and printed tee-shirts have faded and cracked images on the front. This retro chic seems to be a trend within urban clothing for women which has sprung up in the early 2000s until the present.

The true hallmark of urban clothes for women is the attitude. This is displayed in a variety of ways. Some clothes have phrases written directly on the fabric, such as pants with words such as “Sexy” and “Juicy” printed across the seat. These are some of the more obvious means of portraying the attitude of sexiness seen in urban clothing The figure hugging styles of other urban clothes for women also belies sexiness. Even though it is more a subtle message than those printed on the clothes, the short lines and tight seams speaks just as loudly to the attitude of urban clothing.

Either way, wear them with style or wear them with attitude, just make sure you wear them at all.

Retail Clothing Display

Posted by on August 27, 2009 at 9:50 pm in Business

Creating a successful retail, clothing environment is extremely dependant on the display design. A boring store is sure to land flat on its face in today’s exciting clothing world, and a variety of presentations, several fixture types, and multiple levels can make a huge difference. The right design should bombard the customer with several garments at different levels and in different textures but should allow easy traffic flow and not seem too congested. Retailers should not expect the modern customer to spend hours sifting through clothes racks. Instead, through the use of quality store fixtures, a larger number of garments and styles should be presented through multi-level and textured displays.

Clothing displays can be divided into to major categories, those on the floor and those on the walls. The sales floor is utilized for two major things, accommodating customer traffic, and displaying clothes. Through a combination of two arm and four arm racks (which come in slanted or straight forms), round racks, combination racks, and display tables. The standard arm racks are the most common and effective floor fixtures in clothing stores. Though round racks are great for clearance items, arm racks carry a number of garments while showcasing the outermost two or four articles. Instead of the shoulder of the garment being the most visible side, the front of the outermost garments are in full view. A variety of display tables work great for folded clothing. Some people might not understand why some clothes should be folded and others hung, but regardless of clothing care, displaying both will bring more texture to the sales floor. Combination racks are designed for this very reason, having both arm and table display capabilities. These single fixtures give the textured appeal of both folded and hung clothes.

The most optimal space for clothing display in a store is the walls. Keeping the floor as uncluttered as possible will help customers to move about with ease, and by moving a majority of the merchandise to the walls, a large amount of inventory can still be presented without overburdening the floor. Slatwalls and gridwalls are the most popular of wall displays, and they provide excellent and versatile display options. With an enormous variety of accessories like clothing hooks, tables, arm racks, and a many specific designs, slatwalls and gridwalls make presenting any garment or accessory simple. After the walls have been lined with slatwalls or gridwalls, clothing can be displayed in virtually any design format that fits the store best.

As a finishing touch to any clothing store, the addition of mannequins and graphics will enhance any space dramatically. There are countless mannequins in various forms that help the clothing come to life. Customers enjoy seeing how the garments are designed to fit and how different outfits look together. There are full body mannequins, both male and female, as well as mannequin forms that work great for display tables. Large graphics can serve the same purpose depicting actual models wearing the clothes, but they are not limited to this. Pictures on the walls can also provide atmosphere such as outdoor scenes in a store like Eddiebauer or club scenes in a store like Wet Seal. The clothing should set most of the mood, but a little help from mannequins and graphics can go a long way.

These fixtures and strategies help clothing stores to hold customer attention and accommodate traffic, but the bottom line is that great clothes sell themselves. It is important to create store displays that features the clothing and keeps customers focused on the clothes. Congestion, clutter, and overstocked shelves and racks are only distractions that keep people from appreciating the merchandise.
