Children’s clothing items are not manufactured equally, but they are rarely made to fit plus-size children. This makes shopping for clothes for plus-size kids difficult, since many clothes are made based on the standard size of children according to age. This practice is sensible for the manufacturer, since there are more regular-sized children than plus-size ones. However, the number of overweight kids is increasing drastically. The most recent study done by Newsweek states that 14 percent of the kids in America is overweight. This means 14 percent of the kids in the country are having a hard time looking for children’s clothing that would fit them properly.

Unfortunately, plus-size kids need the right children’s clothes according to their fit in order to prevent being ostracized by their peers. Many push their kids to lose weight in order to solve this problem, but weight-loss problems do not yield instant results. Therefore, parents and plus-size children have to make do with the existing children’s clothing available. Luckily, there are ways to make typical pieces of children’s clothing to fit overweight kids so they can live normally and avoid being ostracized and discriminated.

First, overweight kids should avoid oversized pieces of children’s clothing. While oversized t-shirts and pants hide the extra weight, they are not flattering and they merely make the child look sloppy and untidy. Instead, go for clothes that are flattering. Take extra effort to make the clothes look tidy and clean. This is very useful for plus-size kids who wear clothes bigger than their sizes.

Every little detail counts when dressing up an overweight child. Therefore, research on styles and types of children’s clothing that will the child look thinner. A common tip is color usage-wearing clothes of the same color would make the child look taller. Meanwhile, clothes of different colors make the wearer short and clunky. Also, pants with tight waistlines are not flattering since they cause the extra flesh on the belly to bulge. Plus-size kids should also avoid children’s clothing with clingy fabrics since they emphasize the body size. However, the most common tip is the use of clothes with vertical strips to create the illusion of length.

The children’s clothing choices also determine the appearance of a child. For example, tight-fitting clothes are unflattering, but adding an unbuttoned sleeveless shirt on top of it hides what the tight clothing reveals. This can also be achieved by using additional accessories. While additional bulk on the clothes may make the child look bulky (and therefore bigger), a moderate number of accessories like jewelry, bags, and necklaces, among others, may help hide the extra weight. The most important reminder, however this that parents should help their children be comfort with whatever piece of children’s clothing they are wearing.
